Communication Art by Bianca Gubalke

Visual Arts

Expressing oneself through spontaneous sketches, drawings, paintings and many other forms of visual arts exists since prehistoric times as we know from the cave paintings in Lascaux in France as well as from our Bushman Drawings down here in South Africa and Namibia - just to mention those…

Art addresses the Senses

In fact, the common usage of the word “Art” started after 1750 and was commonly understood as an artistic skill combined with imagination that produced an aestethic result or experience that appealed to the Senses and Emotions of others.

Art is Communication

Art in its simplest form is Communication… and as that is and has always been my main topic, passion as well as profession offline - my whole life revolved around it, be it as an artist, illustrator or filmmaker - I am excited to further explore my options and  possibilities in an Online format now. Within the so-called virtual world!

It’s just a beginning, a new personal path to discover, an experiment… but driven by intuition and intent and using a simple online tool to start with. Funnily a tool I theoretically always had access to as part of a graphic art program - but I never used it… although I was encouraged to wrap my creative mind around it often enough.

So the question is why? Why not… and why not then?

Initially, I saw the Internet as a vehicle but not as a tool for expression… Actually, when in around 2001 I started to look at the Internet as more than just a support to write, change and adapt Screenplays and get them to wherever they had to be sent to in the world… I was terrified to see all the golden and universal rules and principles of harmony, colour, precision, design, typography etc  completely violated and abandoned… not to say non-existent. It was an anti-world in artistic terms, painful to see… and it still is.

However…

Online we are all part of the sur-realistic journey towards an autocreating future. Thought plus Intent turn into realities through swords of Time. In that sense, the Internet is evolving dramatically…  programs are becoming more powerful, more sophisticated with less limitations… and this is spectacularly challenging and exciting!

And to come back to the topic at hand… why now?… : within that constantly changing process, I discover a tool offering a direct online application, allowing for a direct gestural impact (although still limited by size=space of course), showing an instantaneous and final result - all LIVE.  And yes… a mouseclick to delete the entire notion in time.

Visualization of Time

This spontaneous, forward moving, intuitive approach for individual expression is exactly what fascinated me at the time when I created a series of short experimental films that were adorned with the official working title “The Visualization of Time” (Kunst & Kultur, SWF Baden-Baden).

Interpreting Behavioral Communication

I had to think about this for a while to understand what was really happening here.

Discovering this little tool in an online environment… a tool that invited and stimulated quick, almost playful individual interaction… triggered a creative process.  This process suddenly stood out with uniqueness and character within a mega mass of replication, duplication, ‘copycation’ and… violation … allowing for anyone’s personal expression in a reduced, simple, fast format! That’s why I called the resulting 10 - 30 second drawings… :

Colour may be added for additional empathy as part of the communication process
between the artist and the viewer in the newly created reality in the virtual world…

An Artistic Impression of Now

Warmth and sunlight are returning to the Northern Hemisphere to announce the glory of Spring, but Nature down here at the wild tip of Africa is getting ready for winter.

The leaves are torn away by roaring autumn storms ; heavy thunder is bouncing off the mountains and lightning zizags across a dangerously flat sea…

Slowly, daylight turns into a dizzy mossy curtain brushed by the first rains 2009. . .

A moment… a feeling… a sketch - right now!

To be continued. . .
