Branding your Printed Matters

Using Microsoft Office, it is a relatively easy task to brand your printed matters. The most recent Ycademy Seminar dealt with the various features provided by Office 2010 and this weeks calls will apply the branding concepts further.

Web Design Workshop Navigation (continued)

Subsequent to last night’s Workshop let’s recap some of the challenges faced when styling the Category Navigation. At the bottom you will find 3 sample navigation style codes as elaborated during the workshop.

1. Starting Position

During the previous session we had added style to the first level category navigation. Yesterday we added design to the drop-down menu.

Toni’s starting style-sheet shows the styled top level Category list with the hover effect, Green-White switching to White-Green.

The drop-down is raw in gray tones and needs to be styled.

In our style-sheet, the concerned lines are lines 110 – 173 for the whole navigation design and for the drop down menu particularly lines 168 – 173.

The first important element for our Navigation Web Design is to be found on line 112:

border-bottom: 1px solid #fff;

This line adds a white bottom border to each list item block.

2. The Drop-down Menu Style

We are now looking at lines 168 – 173:

We start from the main Navigation, an unordered list (ul):

In our style-sheet we find names for each item: navigation ul is the navigation unordered list, i.e. all the categories which will be represented in this list on top level. Sub-categories are dealt with as subordinated lists or lists under lists. If we have a list of the top level categories, then we can also have a list of second and third and so on level categories.

To designate the list under a list we use ul (for the first list) ul (for the second unordered list). In our case ul ul defines the second level list of categories which we want to show as a drop-down menu.

On Felisa’s drop-down menu we see the styling of the ul ul li … meaning the List Items (li) of the subordinated list (ul ul).

Under the Category Sports Club Fundraising we find a Category called Cricket Club Fundraising.

The problem is that the sub-category displays on two lines because of the length of the sub-category name.

In our original style-sheet, the width of the list item (li)  in the subordinated category list (ul ul) is defined in line 169 as follows:

In order to increase the width of navigation ul ul li (you see how easy it becomes), you just increase the width:159px;.
In Felisa’s case, we just stretched it to 188 pixels:

You see how the sub-menu now fits nicely. We just need to be aware that all sub-categories will be displayed in a block of that width. If we have just one specially long category name amongst all the sub-categories we display, it may look better to make an exception for that category and display the name on two lines. Up to you to decide.

Other examples of similar challenges we find on Larrie Perkins’ play-ground:

Now: if we have to go through the 50 States on that menu on Larrie’s site, then we will most likely have to find another solution all together (a scroll-bar) or he may want to create different top categories, like East, Center and West.

But in any case, it will be worth while to increase the ul ul li width.

Also the white bottom-border from line 112 would make the design clearer.

The font color on the main category is not ideal; white is better for readability.

One more interesting menu is to be found on Gene Line’s Auto Parts site:

We could of course decrease line spacing or line height for the drop-down menu by adding a call to ul ul li as follows:

line-height:130%;

The 130% means: line height is 130% of the font size.

Boruch Rappaport Navigation

Nice shot on Boruch Rappaport’s site where the ul ul li is adjusted to a width of 173 pixels. The choice of a color scheme with a light and a dark color results in a nice alternation of the colors when hovering.

A particular problem can arise if you use just black and white tones on the site. Besides the problem of readability, from a web design point of view, Bianca Gubalke wanted to show dark sepapartors on the white background of the drop-down menu.

This is achieved by modifying line #navigation ul ul li as follows:

As you can see, we have replaced the # navigation ul ul li call border with a call for border-bottom.

As a result we now have the white background on the drop-down whereas the List Items are separated by a 1 pixel wide dark gray line. This is a more elegant solution than the full border as on a full border, all around the list item, the bottom border of the superior item and the top border of the inferior list item generate the impression of a 2 pixels wide horizontal separator, while the vertical borders left and right are just 1 pixel strong.

Web Design Workshop: Navigation (continued)

Yesterday we started to look at the Navigation bars with focus on the horizontal category navigation. The script of the Workshop is published under Web Design Workshop Navigation. Today we will continue on the Category navigation, namely with the drop-down menu.

Before entering today’s workshop, here are some notes concerning issues observed yesterday:

1. Larrie Perkins

We observe Larrie’s attractive color scheme when hovering. Note at the bottom of the shot: posts are signed by “admin”; I would suggest to edit the user account and switch from admin to Larrie Perkins as Nickname and Display Name.

This site went down after the workshop due to a cache error, see below.

2. Felisa Ryan

Vivid colors here with the advantage that most any monitor can render the basic colors. The modifications on the site were not visible to participants because of a cache error; see below.

3. Super Cache

If you have the Super Cache plugin installed and running, disable it while designing and editing your style-sheet.

To disable go to your Dashboard – Settings – WP Super Cache and disable from there. Don’t disable the plugin from Dashboard – Plugins!

Alternatively, leave the Super Cache on but empty the cache and select “Don’t cache pages for logged in users”. Then update settings.

4. Troubleshooting

If you experience problems with the site, or if you need help concerning yesterday’s session, join yorGOtalk 1 hour early at 8 pm tonight; I will be there to help.

5. Prerequisites for tonight’s Workshop

- Please make sure you have loaded the new Semiomantics XO version to your site: just copy and paste the new xo folder via FTP into your wp-content/themes folder overwriting the existing xo folder.

- Make sure you have categories and sub-categories configured; if you don’t have subcategories, just create some 2 or 3 sub-categories under an existing category and call them Category 1, Category 2, Category 3.

- Make sure you have a post in each Category and Sub-Category. I have described how I handled the problem HERE.

NextGen Gallery integration with the release candidate of the future Ycademy Framework was the topic of last night’s Webmaster training. The recommended basic configuration of NextGen Gallery was easy to implement. The numerous widget hooks on the Ycademy Framework release candidate allow for efficient display of images.

The Ycademy Framework

Ycademy is the Working Title for a new Framework Development by Semiomantics, based on the Framework used on Yorgo Nestoridis. The framework unites Semiomantics Google Top 10 modules as well as all the necessary hooks for future oriented Media publishing.

Semantic Communication using other media than the written word is of paramount importance a society where communication has no boarders and where people have shifted from reading to viewing and listening, sensing and feeling. A public release is not planned before the end of the year as more development is required. Customized applications are however already under construction.

Ycademy Pro’s will be the first to receive the final release as part of their Ycademy Pro Pack.

YORGOO Press Important Update

This post concerns Ycademy Pros and users of YORGOO Press and their Publications hosted on YORGOO Press Servers. Due to the complexity of Semiomantics Scripts and since we introduced the direct hooks to social networks in and out, some of the sites experienced a certain number of issues, leading us in certain cases to reset the sites. This concerns namely the sites of Felisa Ryan, Zo Nicholas, Larrie Perkins and Brenda Baker.

A solution is in view and will be implemented this week-end, time permitting.

The Goal

Semiomantics provides the best online publishing system to its users. It’s performance is proven daily and over time. Semiomantics Publishing is technically a complex issue and the sites set up for users and customers allow most anyone to achieve exceptional results, not only on Google Top 10 targets but also on social networks since we added social network publishing elements to the scripts.

There is no way we will cut the power of Semiomantics because of increased need of resources or to make concessions due to script or software incompatibility.

We aim to rewrite parts of Semiomantics scripts and to implement these to the suffering sites in order to get them all back to normal by Sunday Night with even higher capacities and more punch.

Furthermore: YORGOO Press is a concept allowing its users to use at any time the latest technology based on the latest script versions of the WordPress back-bone; the same applies to plug-ins. We want to keep it that way.

The Problem

WordPress has become more complex over time and as well WordPress and Plugin designers squat their scripts with links and features which are not relevant to any vital or essential function. However, with every upgrade we need more resources from our servers to run all the processes which are run automatically in the background for the benefit of script users.

We also notice that some parts of WordPress and some plug-in scripts are using an unjustifiable amount of memory due to bad coding. Updates on WordPress often entail an update of plug-in scripts and plug in updates may create compatibility problems within the mix of scripts used on each site.

Some of the most delicate plugins concerned are Twitter Tools and All in one SEO Pack namely in relation with the Semiomantics specific configuration. Permalink structures, canonical link configuration as well as the bit.ly add on script have caused some of the issues we are facing.

The Solution

There are 3 ways to improve the situation and to plan for future expansion:

1. Semiomantics scripts can be improved to handle more data using less resources (coding)

2. We will need to tweak and hack some of the more delicate plugins and to use our own versions of these modified plugins. (coding)

3. We can increase the memory allowance to each site. (money)

2 Test Sites: Zo Nicholas and Larrie Perkins

We have restored Larrie Perkins and Zo Nicholas sites using a mix of the 3 above mentioned recipes. For the time being they run smoothly. We are working with the data center on reorganization of our servers as we want to allocate 128 MB of memory to all sites and foresee a potential increase to 256MB. You can do the Math: how many sites will we be able to host on 4GB RAM server units …

It boils down to a simple conclusion: new WordPress versions in connection with certain plug-ins require loads of memory which cannot be found on shared hosts. The problem has been observed elsewhere as well and it seems that some hosting companies recommend, not to go beyond WP 2.7.1 on their shared host as memory limits are likely to bring the sites down.

On dedicated hosts, the limit is the total of server memory, the available RAM and this will simply limit the number of sites we are able to host on each server. Increase of capacity can be achieved by clustering more server units, meaning, it’s a question of cost.

Since a while, I receive almost daily inspirational mails from a mystery person in Canada – and as I assume he or she is somewhere in my YORGOO Team I hope this is being read by… YOU!
With all the Spam coming in, this mystery mailer just sends a refreshing moment of light and laughter without any  commercial hind-thoughts – and at times at the absolutely right moment when needed. I have thanked and received responses without the veil of mystery being lifted. I guess I could track the mystery sender down… however, I prefer that things unfold with Magic. Must be the child within me… duh! Let’s see… but here’s what I received as one of the many magnificent images from this year’s Sand Castle Competition in the so-called Sand Sculpture Capital of the World at Harrison Hotsprings, British Columbia, Canada. Cheers… another hint here: Location Location!

Looking at these transitory sculptures built of sand… and bearing in mind that every grain of sand was shoveled there by its respective sculptor… arent’ we amazed at their expressions and an incredible attention to detail in the execution…. ?

And as a second thought, don’t we all just sigh at the idea that – sooner or later – weather will ruin it all and what will be left is nothing but the memory of Fantasies and Dreams materialized in sand… and gone with the wind… until a new year, a new cycle lifts the participants to new heights of Creation? Just for the Fun of it…

Being part of the process is what makes us a Winner on a personal level already - although, for our career on the Internet we don’t build with sand nor on sand, and according to Yorgo recent scientific studies have come to the clear conclusion that it takes us 10 years of consistent and committed work to achieve Excellence in what we do! It’s all a matter of Power… and while you may be wondering what exactly I mean… : my electricity is back and with it the Internet – so hallelujah! here we are, in the middle of a most delightful summer day with mysterious fog banks chasing each other across the Atlantic Ocean… and yes – it’s back to work! Or whatever you call what you do when you love doing it!

To do that even better… I am still counting on one of those beautiful VAIO laptops on DubLi Auctions – the $1000 Value to be snapped for 30% less minimum if not ZerO to start with… and then I have my eye on a Nikon D80 or a Nikon D 80 (see the space makes a difference here, at least on Google?) to take a picture to show you how life on the beach is like… not only in Vouliagmeni in Greece but also at the wild and wonderous tip of Africa!

However, I still prefer going to the beach without anything (or almost lol… one needs a hat under the African sun…) and then since I spotted the Nikon D90 I will go hunting for that one. I know I’m not alone … there’s at least Laetitia Paris from France who has the same in mind… so we go hunting together.
