Online Marketing is not much different from offline marketing in as much as your Profile is concerned. Selling online is to a large extent (over 60% according to recent studies) based on pull marketing dynamics, meaning: the customer is looking for the product he has decided to purchase.

What does that have to do with your profile?

Quite a lot. Online Marketing has become much more a “personal affair” over the last few years and the preselling process must get our utmost attention. Whether you sell on eBay or from your own web site, the key is : trust, credibility and authority – your Profile.

On eBay, you have 3 basic means to profile yourself: your feed-back record (probably the most important), your “About me” page and the way you present your goods or services.

On your personal web site you cannot profit from the feed-back record except by publishing testimonials from happy customers, and yet, it’s not as netral and independent as a feed-back record managed by a third party.

The way you present your goods or services must have that professional look people are looking for. A personal touch to create empathy is a must.

The “About me” page is crucial. In fact we are not just talking about an about me page, but in a much wider sense, about your public profile.

Your Public Profile is composed of various elements, amongst others of a clear and professional About me profile, you can host where ever deemed usefull.

If you are a networker or an affiliate marketer, you have two choices dependent on the Merchant or Vendor you are involved with:

Either the Merchant has a very prosonalized sales pipeling you target with your traffic, or the merchant’s site is a rather neutral informative environment.

In the first case, the merchant is actually selling and your endorsement is of lesser importance.

In the second case, and most networking opportunity sites are in this category, you must pre-sell. The art of pre-selling passes through the art of selling yourself and that means that you base the process on your Public Profile, whereas you extract for the occasion the elements needed to create empathy or to whitness authority. These elements you must then knock into shape to optimize the “likeability” factor.

Your Public Profile is an asset if it’s a good one. In the contrary case, it may become your biggest liability. The evolution in ecommerce has lead to a situation, where “no profile” is a liability. A Liability which prevents you from taking off at all.
